When state walks into your building (skilled nursing facility), you have a list of required documents, starting with 8 items due within one hour. Additionally, questions are thrown at you quite quickly, and it makes you momentarily forget your own middle name. Stay calm and the training and education kicks in.
An example of the responsibility we have as therapists and psychologists, especially when working with this population, is they may not be aware of the medicines they are taking (Haasum, 2022). Where does that leave us? Some say we do not prescribe, so it is not our scope of practice, but I disagree—we need to understand what is happening to our clients and patients so that we may safely help them.
I found an older resource on the invisibility of the aging (Birnstengel, 2017). It made me wonder if things have changed in the past few years—surely, because we have research that is 5 or more years old on the topic, there should not be any more issue. One of the articles in our library (Kowsalya & Sundara Raj, 2021) discussed almost the same topic, but this time in relation to the pandemic. We learn a lot through research but . . ..
What can we do, as practitioners to avoid or lessen this feeling of isolation and being left out?
Dr. C.
