A servant leader is one who out of love serves others needs beforetheir own, voluntary submits themselves to a higher purpose, which isbeyond their personal interests or the interests of others, uses thepower that is entrusted to them to serve others, teaches the followers,in word and deed on how to become servant leaders themselves. Theservant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helpspeople develop and perform as highly as possible. Servant leadership iscaring leadership and helps to build trust because followers believethat their leader genuinely cares about their welfare. He or she is askilled communicator, a compassionate collaborator who has foresight, asystems thinker, and someone who leads with moral authority (PSU, 2013) .A servant leader recognizes that the people doing the work generallyhave the best ideas about how to improve the processes they participatein. Servant leaders are compassionate, considerate, and empathetic.Reaching beyond self-interest, they put the well-being of those theyserve before their own needs. Leaders who are properly fulfilling a callof leadership perform at a higher level that is representative of andcomplementary to the vocational level while adding a special dimension.Jesus showed a role model by washing his servants feet. Thereforeservant leaders are called to serve not to be served. But whoever wouldbe great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be firstamong you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to beserved but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Matthew20:26-28). Servant leadership offers a fresh approach to meeting thecritical leadership challenges of contemporary organisations, whilehonouring the humanity of everyone they touch( Benton, 2017) The termsof the work world have changed . Employee expectations andorganisational mandates have shifted. In order to be successful andrelevant leader in the work environment, servant leaders must learn newways of leading, throwing off the old command and control styles ofmanagement and adopting models that are principled and service-driven.This requires more than a to-do list. It demands a fundamentalre-imagining of corporate culture and organisational health.Organisations are like people. They can be healthy or ailing and evenmoribund. An organisation’s state of health affects its employees,customers, processes, reputation and bottom line. It seeps into theirethics, agility, relationships, ability to attract talent, customerloyalty and culture(Benton, 2017).
