My roommate is heavy into the Real Housewives franchise on Bravo. I tried to stay away from indulging because I had no interest in consuming more of my time on brain-numbing reality television. “Eric, I can’t believe you’re not watching this,” he said as he rewinds a scene. He hits play, I sit down and, before I know it, brain-numbing reality television began consuming more of my time. Hello, my name is Eric and I am an addict. And, honestly, I needed a break from homework anyway.
I touched base on social media last week and how it nearly consumes people to the point that their reality becomes skewed. I see the same thing with reality TV. People get so involved with the lifestyles of reality stars and completely dismiss the fact that, more so than not, it is all for show and heavily scripted. This, in turn, allows people to remove themselves from their personal dilemmas and dive into the falsified lives of people they don’t know. Soon, people are using random phrases and new products are flying off of the shelves because somebody on one of their shows brandished them. Or, better yet, they’re running to social media to berate cast members. “Reality shows have not only amassed incredible popularity but have also become an object of severe, wide-ranging criticism” (Witkowski, 2016). Networks know this and push the trend. And, as much as people claim that they don’t want the drama they watch on reality TV in their lives, they consume that negative energy and it has the potential to carry over into their lives without realization.
It wasn’t long after watching the Real Housewives losing their cool at a dinner party that I was feeling myself wishing for more drama if the next episode lacked. Not saying everyone who appeases the reality TV gods is receiving the same experience. It’s just something I’ve recognized as a pop culture sensation.
Looking within, I think I’ve done a pretty healthy job in keeping myself clear of absorbing the drama as my own. It does take significant effort at times to not binge-watch a week’s worth of reality TV, but it’s honestly a necessity in order to keep up with pop culture today. The news is filled with these reality stars while, depending on the agenda, real-life stories take a backseat. It’s helped me remain aware and keep up with current events outside of the many social media posts or TV shows of people I simply use to briefly escape my reality. Hmm… Am I doing a healthy job?

TikTok is a social media phenomenon that my daughter engages with for way too many hours a day, in my opinion. Quite honestly, I needed to look up a definition because I am not a fan. “TikTok is a popular social media app that allows users to create, watch, and share 15-second videos shot on mobile devices or webcams. With its personalized feeds of quirky short videos set to music and sound effects, the app is notable for its addictive quality and high levels of engagement” (D’Souza, 2022). Upon further analysis, videos can be longer than 15 seconds. This app is the epitome of an influence that is society driven and vice versa. Anyone can post, watch, or share, period.
For me, TikTok could help me to understand what hobbies or things I enjoy by watching things such as cooking videos. I also get tips and tricks to common household problems that I find myself having to fix being a single mom and not wanting to hire, or actually not able to afford to hire, someone to fix for me. I have watched a couple of DIY videos here and there also. I could probably become addicted to certain types of videos if I let myself. TikTok is absolutely a hit with society at this point and I wonder if it will become a sort of fad and fade away. Nevertheless, it is here now, and it will be neat to see how it plays out in the years to come.
