1. Why might an organization’s legal rules sometimes be insufficient to fulfilling one’s ethical responsibilities? Can you think of cases in which a businessperson had done something legally right, but ethically wrong? What about the opposite—are there situations in which a businessperson might have acted in a way that was legally wrong but ethically right?
2. Describe a work related event or decision that you would judge to be clearly unethical. Can you think of any circumstances in which it would be ethical? Can you imagine a situation in which you yourself would do something unethical?
3. Which kind of organization would you like to work for? Which would you consider to be the best? Which would be the most realistic? Think about its structure, physical environment, line of communication, treatment of employees, recruitment and promotion practices, policies towards the community, and so on. Consider also, how some benefits are reversely proportional (for example, if the company contributes to the community or offers more employees benefits, there might be less money for pay raises).
4. You have been asked to join the board of a large corporation. Based on Ethical Decision-Making: Corporate Governance, Accounting, and Finance, what would be some of the questions that you should ask and what are the answers that you are expecting? Explain the Sarbanes and Oxley Act of 2002 and impact on corporate governance.
5. Do some research on corporate sustainability reports. Research at least three corporations that issue annual reports on their progress towards sustainability. Can you research one company that does not and explain why not? Can you discover whether or not if has plans to change?
6. A customer service representative at an electronics store is surfing the Internet using one of the store’s display computers. She accesses a web site that shows graphic images of crime scenes. Meanwhile a customer passes by noticing the images and becomes offended. Another customer service representative is behind the counter, using the store’s computer to access the company customer database. A female customer asks him why he is laughing. He turns the computer screen around to show her the record of another customer owing more than $10,000. Is there anything wrong with these activities?
7. Are some company’s products too dangerous to be marketed under any circumstances? What regulations, if any, would you place on marketing cigarettes? Handguns? Drugs?
8. Reflect on your learning of the questions above and write a list of your “Top Three Takeaways.” Explain why you chose each concept, how you have utilized it in your own life, and how you think it will help you in your future role as a leader.
