OVERVIEW
In Special Education (SPED), students with disabilities historically have received a growing list
of support through case law to become successful in life, including the classroom. Many times,
SPED laws are developed by federal legislation. Other reasons for the passage of SPED laws
come from the goals of parents to have their child with disabilities receive the support needed. It
is important for every teacher of students with disabilities to know what the SPED laws are in the
United States, given that these laws are the driving force behind the services offered to students
with disabilities.
INSTRUCTIONS
Using the provided SPED Law Timeline Template, you are to create a timeline of ten special
education laws/revisions, and explaining the major provisions of each. You will be providing
information on SPED law, not court cases. Court cases are indicated by a V. or VS. between
names, such a Brown VS. Board of Education. Court Cases will be discussed in a subsequent
module.
Items to include are outlined as follows:
 Using the provided SPED Law Timeline Template, explain each law in a 150-word or
more paragraph, written in scholarly language (i.e., no slang, contractions, spelling errors,
etc.).
 The format of the assignment is to adhere to current APA formatting, with a title page, in-
text citations in each paragraph, and a references page listing all sources cited in the
submission.
 The number of citations should be at least ten, one for each law. If you used more than
one source for a law, add the citations and reference for that source.
 Acceptable sources are scholarly articles published within the last five years. Websites
with timelines, pictures, or other non-peer-reviewed sources are not to be used.
Please review the SPED Law Timeline Grading Rubric before completing the timeline.
