Purpose of this assignment:
A good starting point for learning about human development is to examine your own development. This project provides the opportunity to take the information that you have learned in this class as well as your own life experiences and apply them to Erikson’s stages of development. The goal of this assignment is to help you develop a clear and deep understanding of each stage and how they relate to development. The goal is NOT to write an actual autobiography, but to learn a little about yourself and how children develop at certain times in their lives through the lens of Erikson’s stages of development theory. You will also have the opportunity to make predictions about your future development based on your past experiences.
Review of Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development:
In class we will review Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development. Erikson believed that all humans pass through eight stages of development throughout their lifetime. He found that all of us, in all cultures, pass through these same stages during our life span. He believed that during particular age ranges we have the opportunity for healthy development, unhealthy development, or somewhere in between. The way we humans develop depends upon our genetic make up, our temperament, our circumstances, our environment and how we were treated by our significant caretakers. Erikson believed that these stages were important because they could have a direct and profound effect on a person’s life through adulthood. Make sure you have a clear understanding of each stage of development, as you will be applying these stages to your own life.
Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust (Birth to 18 months)
Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt (18 months to 3 years old)
Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt (3 to 5 years old)
Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority (5 to 12 years old)
Stage 5: Identity vs. Role Confusion (13 to 18 years old)
Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation (18 to 40 years old)
Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation (40 to 65 years old)
Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair (65+ years old)
Brainstorming before starting the assignment:
Spend some time reflecting on your past. Think about the following questions and other memories you have of growing up to help formulate a picture of your childhood. You may need to gather more information about yourself from others, such as parents, siblings, family friends or childhood friends. You could also watch home movies and look through family photos.
When did you potty train? Starting eating and getting dressed on your own? Talking? Were these tasks easily achieved, or were there challenges?
What are some of your fondest memories?
Who did you admire as a child?
What is still a difficult memory?
What were the major influences in your life when you were growing up?
What did you enjoy doing? What didn’t you enjoy doing?
Did you have a lot of freedom to explore?
Who were the people you trusted?
What memories do you have about school?
PROJECT OUTLINE
Title Page:
Include your name, date, and class information. Be creative and add a photograph of yourself or a picture!
Introduction:
Provide background information about yourself. This can include information about your family, culture, ethnicity, early life circumstances, socioeconomic status as a child, where you are from, and anything else you feel is relevant to your development and understanding who you are. Then, make a connection to Erikson’s stages and explain how you are going to compare your childhood to his Psychosocial Theory of Development.
Erikson’s Stages:
Examine your growth and development related to the first 5 stages of Erikson’s Psychosocial Development theory. Write about your experience of each stage while growing up. Discuss the impact that family, friends, school, community, and other aspects had on your childhood development. For each of the 5 stages you will:
Name the stage (example: Trust vs. Mistrust). Use each stage as a heading.
Provide the age range associated with the stage.
Define the stage in your own words. This should be a brief definition; about 2 to 3 sentences. If you use resources to help you, be sure to cite them (see References section below).
Show where you see yourself on the scale for this stage. Example scale below:
Trust ——–X———————————————————Mistrust
Describe life experiences that occurred during the stage’s age range to explain why you placed yourself where you did on the scale. You may provide several examples or one event that had a major impact on you.
Explain how your examples directly relate to the stage and Erikson’s theory.
The above is to be completed for each of the first 5 stages. Each stage should be about a page long.
Conclusion
Reflect upon what you learned about yourself. Perhaps you learned something new about your childhood, or have a new perspective of your development. Next, share your overall thoughts about Erikson’s Psychosocial Development theory. This is an open ended reflection, but if you need some direction consider describe how well you were or were not able to relate to it, if you believe it is an accurate theory, or what do you like or dislike about it.

APA citation style is required for this assignment. You will need to reference all resources you use to help you formulate ideas for this assignment. This will most likely be needed for your stage definitions. This is NOT needed for family member conversations, home movies or pictures. APA citation requires both in-text citation AND a resource page.
