We have discussed the rise of political power and authority in small, decentralized societies such as bands and tribes in the first half of the semester. How do state systems arise? How is power, prestige and wealth distributed in this type of systems? What are some of the special challenges that all state systems face? Pick any known state system and illustrate how these issues have been addressed.
2. In considering the “individual in the political arena”, or Political Man, describe both Action Theory and Game Theory. How do these two theories explain the normal and supra-normal operations of our American political system? Also explain how Max Weber’s gauge of Socio-Economic indicators, wealth, prestige, power fit in with Political Man. Feel free to use real life examples.
How have gender roles in the World changed, and what affect has this had on our social/cultural and political institutions? How have women in Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia recently used their powers to help formulate new attitudes and perceptions of their power, prestige and wealth? Please use current, in-the-news figures or peoples we have talked about in class to help illustrate your ideas.
Discuss how people may obtain power away from the usual power holders. In other words, just how accessible is the power of the people? If access to power is limited, who is it limited by and how do the oppressed people of a given state get it back without causing bloodshed? What are some successful models of using non-violence and peaceful resistance as a tactic and strategy for obtaining power?
Discuss the significance of informal, perhaps unwritten laws of conduct and how they reflect the deepest psychological aspects of our personalities and therefore, culture. Please use real-life examples, such as the military, gangs, the Mafia, secret clubs and organizations, fraternities, religious orders, or any others you may know of and can apply.
What is the need for International Laws? Give examples of where International Law has been used in the past. Where could it be applied now and how? Does a world body such as the UN or the World Court in The Hague have jurisdiction over sovereign nations that may be guilty of war crimes?
Describe the political system of the Yanomami Indians of the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela. These are a people who had lived relatively undisturbed for centuries before contact, first with white missionaries in the 1950’s and then with anthropologists in the 70’s. The Yanomami have been described as the “most violent people on earth”. How do the structures of their political system function to keep their culture from coming apart?
What do you see as Anthropology’s role in the ever-changing political world, not only in America, but world-wide? How do you think anthropology can make a difference in law and politics in the future? How can anthropology be able to feedback to the large political machines, its observations on uses and abuses of power and authority?
When top-down power occurs, and it most certainly always will, is resistance and rebellion always an inevitable response? When people feel and actually are politically empowered, is it always a given that there will be violence of some kind? Illustrate your answer with a couple of solid, concrete examples.
How would a Structural/Functionalist describe our own system of Democracy, with its checks and balances, three branches of government, voting laws, etc.? Use examples, situations and we have discussed in class and/or your own.
