1616 unread replies.1616 replies.
For this discussion, please answer ALL of the following questions based on the Week Four Module’s readings and course materials. You will need to respond to at least two other student posts with thoughtful comments and questions, as well as any questions I pose on your own discussion. Your initial post will be due on Wednesday and all responses by Friday:
Outline the development of the Greek Polis. What were the three different types of governments that emerged, and what were the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Using your textbook and your document comparing Athens and Sparta, give a list of the advantages and disadvantages of living in each city-state (you need a minimum of 3 points for each city-state, but do not need to have an equal number of advantages and disadvantages for each one).
Which of the two city-states would you choose to live in and why?
What were the roles, duties, and views of women in Greek society? How was Sparta unique in this case?
choose two examples from the primary sources on The Lot of Hellenic Women to compare and contrast. What do they each tell us about the roles, expectations, and lives of women in Greece?
To what extent was the cultural diffusion of Hellenism comparable in some ways to the globalization (and/or “Americanization”) of culture around the world in modern times?
In reading the primary source, Alexander and the Assimilation of the East, respond to the following questions:
How did Alexander help to fuse East and West?
How did the Greeks react to the assimilation of the “Asiatic” peoples?
Alexander and his successors brought about unity initially by brutal conquest, then later through diplomatic strategies and the spread of Hellenistic ideas. Likewise, as the conquest of Kalinga demonstrated, Aśoka brutally conquered territories before his change of heart and promotion of dhamma. Compare and contrast the role of military conflict and cultural movements (like Hellenism and dhamma) in bringing unity to the Hellenistic world and South Asia.
In reading the Edicts of Asoka, respond to the following questions:
What does Asoka (also referred to as King Piyadasi) promote in his famous Kalinga Edict?
How does he hope to create conditions of religious tolerance throughout his empire?
Using your textbook and the second video on India, what factors led to the development of the Silk Road? In what ways did the Silk Road begin to connect different parts of Afro-Eurasia to one another?
