ANALYTICAL BOOK REVIEW:
Title of
the book: Homer Socolofsky & Allen Spetter. The Presidency of Benjamin
Harrison
The analytical book review will critically examine an
important scholarly book covering some aspect of United States History after
1877. The purpose of the review is twofold: first, to acquaint the
student with a classic volume of historical scholarship and second to allow the
student to think critically about an important facet of American history and to
express those thoughts in clear, cogent, and organized prose. You should
not view this as a hurdle, which you must overcome, but rather approach it as an
opportunity to expand your creativity in thinking and writing like a
historian. Because this is a very important aspect of the course your
review will be graded very carefully. The book review will be at least
1500 words in length, typed and double-spaced. The main objective will be
to comprehensively cover the three sections of the following book review
outline:
Part 1: A brief outline of the book’s content. You
should convey the scope of the book’s content which should contain a salient
discussion of the major themes, ideas, events, personalities, and the temporal
scope of the book.
Part 2: It is important to identify the author’s
thesis. The thesis is the primary idea the author is trying to prove and
convince the reader to accept. You must identify and state the thesis and
show to what extent the author provides evidence to substantiate his
thesis. To do this you must provide specific evidence from the book.
Part 3: You must describe your reaction to the book.
Some of the questions you must answer include:
Do you agree or disagree with the author’s conclusions? Why?
or Why not?
Did the book support or contradict what you read in your
textbook on the same subject? Quote relevant passages from both books.
Did you detect any biases on the part of the author?
What was the author’s background that provide clues for
possible biases?
How in your opinion could the book be improved?
Did you enjoy reading the book?
