Assignment requirements-WRITING UP THE INTERIM PORTFOLIO
Your Development Plan (DP) is the starting point from which to build the Interim Portfolio.
Hours Log: ensure you complete this regularly – daily would be ideal
Section A: Your role(s) Choose ONE or TWO key activities that relate to your major. If your activities have changed, then you must update, this may or may not involve identifying new theories or concepts relevant to your major. Depending on how “accurate” your assumptions were, you may have to make minimal or extensive changes. You must use the feedback from your DP to guide you. Be quite specific and discuss in depth, how the theories/concepts applied to your activities. You should be analysing the application of the theories/concepts i.e., how did they help you to complete the activities, how well did they work in your situation, exactly as the original source (textbook/journal article) stated, did you need to make any amendments and if so why and what amendments did you make.
Identify gaps you may have in your knowledge from your major(s) and discuss how you might overcome these. You should think about areas of your major(s) you identified in your job description that you felt you needed to improve on or other areas that you want to gain more knowledge in.
Section B: Your Professional Skills – If you found, for whatever reason, that your originals goal(s) were not applicable because there was no opportunity to work on them OR the feedback in your DP indicated that your goals needed to revised and/or re-written you will need to identify NEW goal(s) and briefly explain why you couldn’t work on the original goal(s) and develop new steps/strategies demonstrating how you are working towards the new goal(s). (You need to address this straight away, so that you have something to report back on in this Portfolio). Remember to include specific examples of how you are making progress and include feedback from your supervisor to support this and include your own perception of your progress.
Think of the DP as the starting point for your thinking, the Interim Portfolio is where you are going to demonstrate that you are making progress on your goals, between writing the DP and completing this Portfolio. (Refer to the resources on Blackboard on Action Learning [Resources for Reflection folder] to better understand the value of this method of learning. This is where the analysis, critical thinking and reflection start. (Refer to the resources on Blackboard [Your skills as a critical enquirer and creative problem solver and Resources for Reflection]).
Section C: Your Co-operative Education Organisation
Media Log – compiling the media log will require you to scan the local and international press for news items that are relevant to your organisation/industry daily and record the details in your log. When you write the Portfolio, you must discuss one of the events you have recorded and discuss the implications for your organisation and how this could be managed.
Section D: Your Contemporary issue –your idea and research question should be almost, if not finalised by now with your academic supervisor. You need a ‘working title’ which is often best stated as a question, this allows you to ‘answer’ the question through your research. This will then be 2
approved or not approved by your Academic Supervisor. If it is not approved, you will need to work with your Academic Supervisor to refine and finalise before the next Portfolio.
You should have found (and read) approximately 3 academic authoritative sources so that you can write a summary of approximately 200-300 words analysing the new information and the relevance to your topic. This should include the key themes that are emerging from your research. Now that you have started your placement you may be able to further justify your rationale for your Contemporary Issue.
OVERALL:
If you used limited or no theory in your DP then you MUST rectify this, no one can pass the remaining assessment items without the following key components:
ü Use of a RANGE of authoritative literature, theories, concepts and frameworks
ü Analysis and evaluation of the above
ü Reflection
The Interim Portfolio is NOT a cut and paste from the DP you must be extending your knowledge (academic and workplace) and adding new information.
Reference List – Your reference list should only reflect the references in the Portfolio which includes the media log. You will use APA 7th edition format.
