In the United States alone, nearly half of the adults in the country’s population is diagnosed with hypertension. An estimate of 108 million people are classified with this dangerous condition, and are required to take medication, which stabilizes their blood pressure. Minus the developing cities in each country, there is little to no information on the prevalence and risk factors for hypertension in many rural communities. For my research, I would like to focus on the problems regarding the rising trend of hypertension in those rural areas, such as Zambia, Tanzania, the islands of the Caribbean, etc.
This disease is generally asymptomatic; for those who live in urban locations that are constantly emerging and developing, they have access to health facilities, which help detect and treat the issue. The majority of the rural population have inadequate access, where awareness, treatment, and control are not known or studied. With this, I wonder what steps their government has done to educate and assist those that fall under this category.
This topic captivates my interest as I have family members that live in the outskirts of the Philippine Islands. While I know hypertension is a big issue here in the U.S., I am unaware of its common spread in a countryside or agricultural setting.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder most commonly known as ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood, which is usually diagnosed early on as a child and can last into adulthood. (CDC). As an employee for LAUSD this is a topic I have taken much interest in. I worked with several children who were diagnosed with ADHD and I saw the differences in their behaviors. I didn’t always agree with their diagnosis because some of the children I worked with were clearly too young or had other key factors that could have caused the misdiagnose. The number of cases due to ADHD in children and young adults has increased through the years. As of 2016 children of younger age groups (2-5) were added to the surveys, due to younger children being affected by ADHD. (CDC).
There are several steps in deciding if a child has ADHD, unfortunately there is no single test to diagnose this disorder. Due to this, there are many other problems such as anxiety, depression, abuse, and learning disabilities that can be misdiagnosed as ADHD symptoms. According to the Centers of Disease Control, ADHD symptoms can include the following: Fidgeting, squirming, talking excessively and interrupting or intruding others. Doctors must go through several checklists to diagnose ADHD and somehow it is still being misdiagnosed.
My paper will focus on how ADHD is being misdiagnosed and how healthcare systems are blindly ruling out other disorders. These misdiagnoses can lead to doctors unintentionally prescribing medications that do more harm than good. I will also further describe the characteristics, treatments and misconceptions of ADHD.
