Part I – Deviance Discussion
1. Deviance means going against the norm. Look at the notes and free textbook chapter attached below on main deviance theories – they do not all apply to all deviant acts.
2. Explain how the different deviance theories might explain some of the individual or macro level (class/economic, family roles or expectations, acts of domestic violence, divorce (or is that still considered deviant?), gender role expectations, racism
embedded in the social structure of the hospital, CJ system, culture, how people cope with trauma, etc…, etc…) deviant acts
in The Beauty in Breaking. Apply at least THREE specific deviance theories (for example: differential association, control theory, Durkheim’s theories of deviance and functionalism, etc…)! *You can discuss three theories relating to one act or three
different acts – the most important thing here is to show that you understand the theories/explanations!
Part II – The Beauty in Breaking Analyses *Make sure to complete all three parts:
Show me what you have learned about sociological concepts during these few weeksr! You may divide this up into sections,
like short paragraphs on 4-6 concepts (and use concepts from at least 4 textbook chapters/topics – i.e. you may only talk
about two concepts from the culture chapter, for example), you may create a power point with detailed slides and discussion
about the concepts or you may write a more integrated paper. You need to include:
1. Concepts from sociology that apply to what happens in The Beauty in Breaking – you can choose any topic we have
discussed, but here are some ideas:
– Socialization – examples of formal or informal socialization that taught people in the book how to act in their cultures, or
resocialization
– Culture – discuss folkways, mores, counter culture, beliefs and values of dominant American culture (or regional, suburban
versus urban, high culture and wealth versus popular culture), the culture of a professional job, the culture in an Ivy League
university, etc…
– Did you notice gender roles and how they were perpetuated? How did they connect to structural power in society or how do we as an audience judge characters based on what they do compared with our gendered expectations (think about
Dr. Harper’s ambitions or what we expected from her parents, etc…)?
– What are some examples of racial or socioeconomic class inequality?
– What if you wanted to do research on racism in medicine or the criminal justice system or higher education – what methods
would you use and how would you make sure to be ethical – could you use the research to help immigrants or to change laws
and attitudes one way or another (think about how Jane Addams used her sociological knowledge to fight for child labor laws)?
– How did the “actors” use front or backstage behavior and impression management and what did they use these things for?
*Use other concepts and chapters – the above are just ideas – be creative! Go back and look at your notes, my posted notes,
videos on sociology or an online, free textbook if you need more definitions – show me how social forces and social concepts
are alive and how they work on both micro (small, individual) and macro (large, structural, societal) levels!
2. Discuss the concept of family – what does it mean, what are functions of family toward individuals and in the whole of
society and apply these to at least one of the families in The Beauty in Breaking – did they function the way we expect? If not, what social forces affected them?
3. Apply at least one of the sociological paradigms to the overall story or aspects of it.
