The Great Resignation is a phrase coined by Anthony Klotz, an Organizational Phycologist predicting that the work force would be hit by series of resignations in May 2021.
The pandemic brought with it a lot of changes about how people live and interact with one another. It opened the door for the quest for better living and working conditions. Employees started demanding for different working styles coupled with flexibility in working hours, and the reality of working from home. The roll-out of the covid-19 vaccines led to job openings – with better working conditions and the flexibility some employees needed. Different researches on this phenomenon revealed that people quit their jobs for better working conditions, better pay and need for technological advancement in work. People quite their jobs for better job offers. This is the Great Resignation. These resignations have changed the course of the labor force – making it possible for employees to realize when they are not treated well or being burnout by their employers, or rather, understanding that they can incorporate working from home in their working hours. It will most definitely trigger the employers’ consideration of the working conditions of their employees – giving priority to their welfare. The phenomenon has also given courage to employees to realize that they can ‘quit’ when their expectations are not met by their employers. Moving on, the labor market would yield to the cries of the employees and employers in the future will employ different means of advancing the working conditions of employees.
