For this essay, you will analyze how a theme is constructed. Choose from these prompts to help frame your
essay:
1. How does an author create and sustain the theme throughout the work?
2. What is a common theme shared by “The Most Dangerous Game,” Hamlet, and The Outlaw of Gori?
3. How does MST3K make fun of the themes from the literary works and the movies?
4. What are themes conveyed by the segments, jokes, and characters of MST3K?
5. What are common lessons being conveyed through the literary works?
6. What are some lessons being conveyed by the segments, jokes, and characters of MST3K?
As part of the ENG 2000 WE level requirement, you need to find 5 outside sources that are scholarly and
peer reviewed. They can cover any of the works or any topic related to adaptation and theme.
Major question to answer:
What are the authors or writers trying to convey throughout the work? What is the main purpose for the
work?
The Research: Besides researching the works, you should look at sources that discuss adaptation studies,
intertextuality, parody, literary themes, and other pertinent ideas related to the theme you’re analyzing.
Remember, always establish clear criteria during your argumentation, stating clearly what the main theme is.
You need a clear thesis to guide the essay and argumentative topic sentences to guide each paragraph, so make
sure you assert your interpretation and stay focused on a single idea.
Avoid over-summarizing! Consider that your audience has read the work, watched the movie, and been
exposed to the key literary and cinematic terms, so you do not need to define them.
Refrain from any evaluations! Avoid judging how well the author or direct creates the theme. Analyze the
importance of the meaning of the works.
Reminder: Themes are not one word or simple phrases. Make sure to discuss an exact idea. For example,
freedom, family, racism, love, and so forth are not themes. A theme is a specific and complete idea, concept,
message, philosophy, or lesson.
