    Paper 1 Evaluation Paper
Your first assignment is to evaluate a book, movie, or piece of music. Consider your favorite short story, book, movie, or music, or one of the stories linked in the Course Information section under “Printables,” such as “The Lottery,” “Harrison Bergeron,” or “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” and explain why you hold the opinion you do about the piece you have chosen. Similar to a movie or book review that you might read in the paper, you should include relevant details such as the author or artist’s name, title of the work, brief summary of the plot, and an evaluation or analysis of why the elements of the piece contribute to your appreciation of it. Some elements include character, setting, plot, theme, point of view, and conventions of literary, film, or musical development (such as metaphors, figurative language, cinematography, harmony, etc.). You may also include the opinion of experts in the field or compare or contrast the piece to one that is well known. You could also write a similar paper called a “reader response” paper. The slight difference between a reader response paper and an evaluation is that the reader response paper may look at social context, setting, a character, or a detail that speaks to the reader in a particular way to color the way the reader interprets the piece. Perhaps the reader interprets the piece in light of a similar experience or a very different experience. Perhaps the reader’s interpretation is colored by gender, race, or social status. Perhaps the reader’s interpretation is affected by a connection to a place or to a similar work or genre, so that an emotion or nostalgia affects how the reader responds. Like an evaluation, a reader response paper is based on an emotional or intellectual connection but uses evidence from the text (and perhaps outside sources or memories) to make an assessment of what the work means to the reader. Format: 2-3 pages, double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, MLA works cited format. Upload as a .docx or a .pdf only.
