to RESPOND substantially to at least TWO other students’ postings. To respond “substantially” means to actually enter into conversation with the person. You may include a variety of the following: your own opinions, your own observations, a different perspective on the same topic, questions you have for the writer, facts you have uncovered through research, and comments on the value of what the person wrote.

How has globalization changed crime and the idea of crime from a local issue to a global issue?
Globalization has changed crime and the idea of crime from local issue to a global issue because of the liberalization of international market.
International trade is easier, but because there are not enough regulations, thin increases drug trafficking and also human trafficking. And then there is money laundering, there are some regulations in place but there are also a lot of loopholes. There is also organized crime, this has a huge impact in our lives, we do not have to be involved in organized crime to feel the effects. It creates instability and it is a danger to our livelihood. The scary thing is that most of this organized crime is not made up of criminals, but mostly of people involved in illicit activities.
How do different regions of the world function together to influence and propagate crime?
They propagate crime by creating zone off productions, zones of distributions, and zones of consumptions.
Zones of production and distributions are usually in poor countries, where many people are vulnerable and willing to cooperate in order to survive, many times they become victims of crime.
How is the Western World complicit in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and/or war in the Democratic Republic of Congo?
In the Republic of Congo since 1998 5 million people have died, it is the biggest conflict after WW2. Minerals were being traded for weapons, the countries buying the minerals by the Western World, making them complicit in drug trafficking and human trafficking in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
On a side note, did you know that 85% of opium comes from Afghanistan? Because I did not, and this makes me want to read more about this, is the U.S and Europe benefiting from having the Taliban in power, after all they trade heroine for war weapons.

While there are some beneficial aspects of the increased globalization of the past 30-40 years, there’s been some negative effects that are often overlooked in most mainstream discourse about globalization, the chief of which is the expansion of international crime rings such as the drug trade and human trafficking rings. Globalization and free trade have resulted in the lowering of certain restrictions, which has led to an increase in communications between people in different countries. Another important factor in this problem that I think might be overlooked is the expansion of mass telecommunications technology, which makes it far more easy for people to communicate, regardless of where they live. These developments are responsible for an opening of markets for this criminal behavior. Another factor that is important in this trend is the impact of large scale global political events, such as the multi-year collapse of the Soviet Union during the late 1980s and early 1990s. While in a less connected world, these events wouldn’t exert as great of an impact on activity in other nations, the increased interconnectivity of our modern world means that these social changes can influence what happens all around the globe, as shown in Misha Glenny’s story of the McMafia, in which the collapse of the state in many eastern European countries (which made up the old Soviet Bloc) led to increased criminal activity. In my view, much of the western world (or at least its respective governments) continues to be complicit in this criminal activity in several ways. My main theory as to why this is the case is American isoliationism. By not taking a more collaborative and constructive role with countries such as Mexico and instead pursuing an increasingly isolationist stance in our foreign policy, we lose contact with the governments trying to fight these problems head on. Perhaps, if we were more willing to collaborate with other nations, we could help put a stop to these problems.
