Over the past 31 years some 20% of the human genome has been patented by corporate entities. On June 14, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that ended this long standing practice of patenting naturally occurring human genes. The ruling does allow for the patenting of edited or artificially created DNA.
