Our class discussions will be based on using the Hatch Library online resource Opposing Viewpoints in Context to find articles, videos, podcasts, or other artifacts that provide arguments on current social issues in different fields. Opposing Viewpoints in Context is
an interdisciplinary database provided through Hatch that collects viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, videos, podcasts, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles by experts on social issues in a multitude of areas: from psychology
to business, economics, law and politics, health care, science, the environment, technology, etc.
Each week, you will be asked to search through the Opposing Viewpoints in Context database to find one article/artifact on an issue of your choice–preferably one that relates to your current major or the field you’re going into! For your discussion post, you will
summarize the viewpoint that the author takes on the issue, and use your chosen article/artifact to respond to discussion questions
that will be related to the weekly course topic.
We’ll kick off this process this week! Our first discussion is intended to introduce you to using the Opposing Viewpoints in Context
database and to get you thinking about research topics you may be interested in writing about for your Final Paper.
Go to Opposing Viewpoints in Context (you may have to login through Hatch with your BPU account) and search for an article, video,
or podcast that gives a viewpoint on a topic of your choice (see the video below for help on using the Opposing Viewpoints database).
After choosing an article/video/podcast, post a response that answers the following questions:
Summarize the viewpoint of the article/video/podcast you chose: what is the issue and what argument is being provided
on the issue?
Discuss why you chose this article/video/podcast: why does this topic interest you? Why did this specific article/video/podcast
interest you? Do you agree or disagree with the viewpoint of your chosen article, and why?
How does this article relate to potential research topics you can explore for your Final Paper? What questions do you have or what do you want to know more about after reading this article?
