opics vary from section to section. As has been the case for the other major essays in this course, you will have a good amount of flexibility in determining your topic.
As I mentioned in class, I want you to choose a topic that interests you—ideally, a topic that you are passionate about. There are two criteria that I believe you should abide by: it needs to be controversial; it needs to be “research-able.” Regarding the former, “controversial” does not necessarily mean “apt to give offense”; it just means that there is a debate surrounding the issue. Regarding the latter, I want you to be sure to choose a topic for which there will be ample scholarly materials from which to select your sources.
You do not need to take a “hard line” stance in your paper. Personally, most of my opinions fall between the extremes on any given topic. You can argue strongly from the middle/from a more nuanced position. For example, there are people who support abortion rights except during the last trimester of pregnancy and there are people who believe that people should be allowed to own firearms but believe there should be limitations on what kinds of weapons civilians should be able to access. Arguing a hard line position is also completely acceptable, of course.
You can absolutely “get political” with your essay and, if you do so, I expect that you do not waste any energy worrying about whether or not I will agree with your arguments. I will assess your work in terms of the quality of your arguments, no on whether or not we agree.
A successful paper will . . .
. . .have a clear thesis stating, unequivocally, your entire argument.
. . .contain three secondary sources, each of which will be quoted at least twice.
. . .spend some time (at least a few sentences) presenting—respectfully—the other side of your argument.
. . .be properly formatted and contain a works cited page (but no cover page).
. . .be virtually free of mechanical and grammatical errors.
A note on sources: For this essay, all of your sources must be academic in nature and must be accessed by an academic database or other scholarly/academic source.
