Observational/Reflective Journals
You are required to keep a journal/notes of your observations/reflections throughout (before,
during, and after) the civic engagement learning project, which might include: ideas about what
you’re doing; how you’re doing it; the skills required to engage in and promoted by this activity;
what you’re learning about politics and the political process (for example, individual political
behavior, individual attitudes toward politics, the role of organizations, the nature of political
processes, the impact of public policies), etc. You may also reflect each day you work by making
observations about the organization, the nature of your work, the people you are helping and
-i
about broader issues like poverty, race, gender, sexual orientation, family, community, the role of
government in providing these services that you are observing.
You should write a minimum of 1/3 of a page per hour worked (single/double spaced typed or
single spaced handwritten although l’d prefer typed for legibility purposes) for a total of at least 3
pages for the 10 hours worked (technically should be 3 and ⅓ pages total)
Example format for Journals (should have an entry each time you work)*:
Date of work (# of hours work on that day)
Paragraph 1: Today, I did the following for the civic engagement project:
Paragraph 2: What I learned or observations I made today on the job:
Paragraph 3: These observations connect to the course in the following ways (themes, concepts
from the text or broader issues from real word US politics):
* Use the above format each time you do hours. The essay is much easier to write if you
engaged fully with the journal writing
You can make up the stories however use my reflection essay that I attached in file as an inspiration.
