Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice
A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.
However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations.

Leadership Theories in Practice
The impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments
Nurses must work in a healthy work environment that is satisfying, empowering and safe to provide safe and quality patient care. Leadership behaviors have an impact on creating a healthy work environment for nurses. The two key insights I had from the articles are that leaders play a crucial role in creating work environments that influence the experience of employees and subsequent health and job-related outcomes. NURS 6053 Nursing Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice. According to Sili et al (2014), a positive and authentic leader, who is typified by her or his honesty, self-awareness, clarity, behavioral integrity and is empathetic to employees, creates a positive work environment where employees feel empowered.
Positive leadership behaviors lessen the possibility of burnout, dissatisfaction and the intent to leave an organization. according to Mudallal et al (2017),  leadership behavior that empowers nurses to utilize their skills, behaviors, and knowledge to control their work is capable of improving job satisfaction,  commitment to the organization  and quality of care NURS 6053 Nursing Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice.  Empowering behaviors, for instance, by enlightening and showing concern and care lessens nurses’ feelings of depersonalization and emotional exhaustion by making nursing to have trust in the leader and the organization.  Leadership behaviors, particularly transformational leadership behaviors create a healthy work environment where nurses empowered and committed to their work.
Leadership behaviors are capable of assisting employees in developing their potential and empowering individuals to make changes possible. As indicate by Suranto et al (2018), leaders who promote teamwork, involve staff in decision-making, reward excellent work and encourage motivation can improve employee satisfaction and impact the work-life quality.  For instance, a transformational leader inspires followers via motivation to maintain loyalty and to become part of an organization’s shared vision NURS 6053 Nursing Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice. A transformational leader also provides advice and utilizes delegates to assist employees to grow past work and personal challenges.
A situation where 1 has seen the leadership behaviors and skills used in practice.
The situation where I have seen leadership behaviors and skills that create a healthy work environment used in practice is how a nurse manager of the medical-surgical unit death with a nurse who frequently slept on duty. The nurse manager talked with the nurse and convinced him to be more serious about his job.  During the talk, the manager did not criticize the nurse, but he reassured the nurse that he trusted and respected him, but he informed him that should he recognize that he was neglecting his duties which could impact patient outcomes. The manager carefully listened to the reasons and thoughts to know his concerns and needs. The leader encouraged and supported the nurse to improve commitment to the unit. The nurse became more committed to his work, stopped sleeping on his shift, improved his performance and was able to achieve the goals of the organization.
The extent to which the skills were effective and how their practice impacted the workplace
In this situation, the leadership skills that the nurse manager used were greatly effective in enabling the nurse to recognize his mistake and assisting him to change both her behavior NURS 6053 Nursing Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice.  The leader’s skills of open communication and active listening inspired and motivated the nurse, significantly impacting change of behavior. By listening to the needs and concerns of the nurse without criticizing him the leader built a connection of trust with the nurse. The leader established a connection of trust with the nurse by being honest, fair and open with the employee and inspiring him to decide on changing his behavior independently.  The leadership skills generated a positive workplace, which motivated the nurse to be part of the organization’s vision instead of punishing him for his mistake. The skills promoted a workplace in which the nurse felt appreciated and important consequently improving his satisfaction and dedication to his work and the organization NURS 6053 Nursing Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice.
