NOTE: The paper is based on the following research quesion:
“What are the most practical and effective assessments for testing early readers? How should they be administered to measure an accurate result?”
Put in other words, what are the best kinds of assessment tests (like the IRI, for example) to determine how well a young student is doing as they learn to read. Also, how should a teacher administering these assessment tests perform them in order to make sure that they’re actually getting reliable results from them?
ALSO OF NOTE: This is a short paper length for a research paper (only 3-4 pages). In order to cover the topic adequetly, that means there can be no filler sentences or reiteration of things already stated just to meet a word/page counts. The expectation is that there is no wasted space in this paper – every sentence and paragraph is to be focused.
The following is the prompt taken from the course:
——
Students will write a 3-4 page paper that synthesizes the findings reported in professional journals on a topic relating to reading comprehension and the way in which it will influence your own teaching. Your paper should demonstrate understanding of the topic you have researched.
Candidates will use the research data bases and tools at St. Thomas University library to obtain an article on issues related to literacy assessment practices. It is helpful to limit your search to key words, recent years of publication (2000) or particular journals (i.e. The Reading Teacher, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Language Arts, Journal of Reading Education, Reading Research and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Journal of Educational, Issues for Language Minority Students etc.).
How to organize the paper:
The paper should synthesize the relevant literature and relate it explicitly to your research question(s).
APA style guidelines are mandatory. The paper should contain citations from at least 3 different sources.
The sources should be primarily empirical studies as opposed to position papers or editorial articles.
The paper must be 3-4 pages in length, double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 point font. Margins follow APA style with the left side 1.5” and all other margins are 1”.
An introductory section that clearly identifies the topic you are going to focus on. Tell the reader the purpose of the paper and why the topic/issue/question is significant enough to be explored.
A finding section that discusses what you found in the current research. What are the themes that are evident across studies?
An implication section that tells what your project means for teachers or other education professionals. This section contains implications for practice.
A reference section that includes the research articles that you have read and cited. Remember to use APA style.
The paper should include:
A cover sheet
Introduction
Body
Summary
Bibliography of references used
