My professors instructions:
Imagine that you are teaching this course in the future and you would like to develop a unit on music from the years 2010–2020. Craft an argument for a contemporary artist or group (active within the past 10 years) who you feel should be included on the syllabus. Why do you feel that this artist/group should be added to the course?
In your argument, you should address the following questions: (1) What genre or style do they belong to? (2) How would you describe their creative output? Focusing on one standout song describe their work musically and lyrically. Create a listening guide. See the textbook for an example. (3) How do they fit with or stand apart from other artists and themes/ideas from the course? (4) What has their impact been on the music industry and how can you evaluate it? (5) How do they fit within the four themes we have seen in our textbook this semester–music, culture, business, and technology? Think of this as your opportunity to show me how you might apply some of the knowledge and skills learned in this class. There is no research requirement for this paper, however, you will likely find it useful to consult a few outside sources. All sources should be cited in MLA or Chicago format.
My instructions:
I copy and pasted the prompt my professor gave us above. I’m not sure if you want to pick an artist that you feel confident writing about or if you want me to, but it has to be an artist from 2010-2020. I was thinking maybe Adele, Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Frank Ocean, Beyoncé, Drake, Taylor Swift, etc. I will do the listening guide portion of the assignment once you decide which artist you are going to write the paper about.
I am going to attach a screenshot of the different chapters in my textbook so that you have an idea of what the course is about because there is a section in the essay where you need to describe how the artist you choose fits or stands apart from other artists and themes/ideas from the course.
