Scenario
As a manager on a medical surgical unit, part of the job responsibility includes chart audits.
A trend noted during the most recent audit was the overuse of the term “dementia.” The nurse manager notes that there may be a lack of understanding between the types dementia as related to neurological diseases.
The nurse manager developed a survey to evaluate the staff’s understanding of the different types of dementia. As a result of the survey, you have been asked to create a PowerPoint presentation to increase the nurse’s awareness of the types of dementia. Your presentation needs to be informative, but creative and engaging. Remember, you are teaching this information to your colleagues. Is this a presentation you would want to sit through for an in-service? Do not just copy and paste information from your textbook or the internet.
Instructions
Choose one of the following topics for a focused presentation:
Alzheimer’s
Parkinson’s
Vascular Dementia
The presentation should include the following:
Pathophysiology- What is it? What is happening in the body to cause it?
Etiology & incidence- What population is most affected? facts and figures
Health promotion and maintenance- Primary secondary and tertiary planning
History/Risk factors- Is there something that precedes the disease? Risk factors?
Signs and symptoms
Changes in cognition
Changes in behavior & personality
Changes in self-management skills
Changes in motor function/ physical ability
Diagnostics: laboratory and imaging assessment
Planning and implementation
Interprofessional Collaborative Care
Interventions and patient education for the inpatient as well as outpatient teaching
Psychosocial integrity- how does one maintain or educate their patient on maintaining psychosocial integrity? Don’t forget the caregiver
Medications- Do not just list medications- s/s, pt education, nursing interventions (dosing times, activity related to peak times, etc.)
Safety considerations- Inpatient and outpatient teaching and interventions
Using Ignatavicius and one additional Peer- reviewed Journal article no less than five years old, develop a presentation to enhance the nurses’ knowledge of the differences between types of dementia and delirium (this would be a great way to introduce your topic…..). Be sure to document your source(s) in your presentation slides for in-text citation and on the reference page.
Refer to the rubric to make sure that you include all the components required.
