The purpose of this essay is to outline the importance of military and professional bearing in the Army. As pride in self-starts with pride in appearance, Army leaders should always look and act professional. Army regulations and Soldiers on our own creed illustrates how military service members should conduct themselves on a daily basis, on and off duty. The Military bearing is the root in which every Soldier practices in order to carry out good discipline and ethics throughout one’s military career. Professional bearing is the way you take pride in your accomplishments and the majority of your experiences.
According to Field Manual 6-22, “Military bearing is defined as having or projecting a commanding presence and professional image of authority”. All military Soldiers regardless of the branch have an obligation to conduct themselves with dignity and in such a manner as to reflect credit on the military service that they are in. A clean and presentable uniform shows to other members the pride that you take in the obligations you hold in serving your country. Soldiers seen in public with their jackets unbuttoned and ties undone do not send a message of pride and professionalism. Instead, they let down their unit and fellow Soldiers in the eyes of the American people. Personnel inspections as well as award ceremonies demonstrates to ones chain of command how the effectiveness of this military bearing takes place. Knowing how to properly march, stand at attention, parade rest establishes one’s ability to follow orders precisely. The sharp uniform, perfect haircut, and their motivation and pride in their appearance. It is also the way you maintain your composure and contain your emotions at all times. Even when some might think it is necessary to speak ones thoughts, that is where military bearing comes into play and maintains the composure of the Soldier themselves.
General Martin Dempsey stated, “The Profession of Arms requires expert knowledge, and that expertise is manifested as unique skills in the individual professional and by Army units.” The term professional has always been loosely associated with the Army since its official organization in 1775. The Army is a profession because it requires specialized skills and human expertise, establishes ethical behavior for its members, and contain members who embrace and are stewards of the culture. All military members should possess specialized skills that combine to operate in complex situations in more complex environments. Meeting prescribed the height and weight standards is another integral part of the professional role. How leaders carry themselves when displaying military courtesy and appearance sends clear signal.
There are five characteristics of Army profession: honorable service, stewardship of the profession, military expertise, esprit de corps and trust. Trust is the most important of the five characteristics of the Army profession. Without trust, we would lose the support of the American public. The Army exists for a solitary reason, which is to serve the Nation by defending the constitution of the United States of America. Our country places trust in the Army to defend our constitution against foreign and domestic enemies. It is our responsibility to preserve this given responsibility at all cost.
Being professional can be arriving to work and appointments on time, meeting deadlines, be in the right place at the right time. Morning formation is the most important part of the day. Showing up late in formation is an act of nonprofessional. This kind of behavior can hinder the mission. All military member are required to be punctual and reliable. Physical readiness standards are another element of military bearing. Physical readiness test is ensures all service members are physically fit. Leader should always lead by example and have proper military and professional bearing.
The Army has been and continues to be value based organization where everyone is encouraged to do what is right by respecting each other. So, the things like hazing, bullying, fraternizing is not acceptable in the military.
