Reflective Essay Requirements
Purpose:
The
purpose of the ABSN Reflective Essay is to assess student attainment of ABSN program
learning outcomes. Students will reflect upon their professional and personal
growth, as well as, service to the College and the community during the
educational experience. Reflection of professional and personal accomplishments
assist graduates in preparing for employment interviews and resume writing.
Due Date:
Due
date is November 7th @ midnight.
The
two-part essay must be satisfactorily completed to receive a grade for NUA 451.
Instructions:
Students
will complete a written essay explaining how the two components, as listed
below, have been met. The essay has two components including: 1) BSN Program
Learning Outcomes and, 2) Summative Reflective Essay.

The
essay is to be 6 to 10 pages in length, typed and double-spaced..
·
The
essay must follow academic, grammar/writing guidelines. Formal rather than conversational grammar must
be used. The essay is intended to be written in first person as it is a personal
reflection of accomplishments.

Submit
the essay as one document to the assigned drop-box.
·
Once
the instructor has verified successful completion of the essay, your instructor
will record that you have completed the Reflective Essay requirement.
PART I: Achievement
of ABSN Program Learning Outcomes
Explain
how you have met each of the ABSN program objectives (include at least one personal specific example per objective). A minimum of one paragraph for each outcome is required to
discuss attainment of the outcome.
1.
Synthesize knowledge from
liberal education to support generalist nursing practice. (IO: Knowledge, BSN

2.
Synthesize knowledge from
nursing science to support generalist nursing practice. (IO: Knowledge, BSN

Analyze organizational leadership practices in

Translate research findings to provide
evidence-based practice of nursing care.

Analyze information management systems to deliver
quality patient care in a variety of settings. (IO: Improvement, BSN

in the delivery of quality patient care.

financial and regulatory, impacting the healthcare system. (IO: Knowledge,

Evaluate clinical prevention strategies to improve
population health. (IO: Knowledge,
BSN Essential VII)
Demonstrate professional behaviors in nursing
practice. (IO: Servant Leadership, BSN Essential, VIII)
PART II: Summative
Reflective Essay Topics
Address
each
of the following topics and questions. Please do not include specific
client/patient names from clinical or community experiences. A minimum of one
paragraph is required for each topic.
1. Educational

Discuss your educational experience at

What experiences have most positively
affected your personal and professional growth during your education at MCHS?
How has the content from the Liberal
arts and sciences affected the development of your nursing knowledge, skills
and attitudes?
2. Ethical Decision
Making
Discuss your ethical decision-making
experiences.
What principles guide you in making
difficult ethical decisions?
How has your educational experience
developed your ethical decision-making?
Give an example of an ethical decision
you have had to make during your educational experience. (Do not reveal any
confidential information.)
How will you approach ethical decisions
in your future career as a nurse?
3. Professional Growth
Discuss your professional growth over the
course of your educational experience.
How has your image of a nurse changed
from before entering the nursing program to the present time?
Identify the nursing area in which you
completed your preceptorship and briefly discuss how experience has
contributed to your ability to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge
necessary for the role of the professional nurse.
4. Service
Discuss
service as it relates to you personally.
List the agency or agencies in which you
completed your service-learning hours.
How has your understanding of service
changed after completing the service learning experiences?
How do you plan to incorporate service
into your role as a registered nurse?
Have you participated in
professional organizations during your BSN student career? If so, how?
Have you participated in
leadership in school or community organizations? If so, how?
5. Communication
Ability
Discuss the development of your
communication abilities over the course of your education.
Discuss your current strengths and
challenges in written and verbal communication, including growth in
assertiveness and self-confidence during your educational experience.
