Mentoring and Coaching – Essay Instructions Essay Option 3: ‘Desta’
You work as a learning and development manager for an Atlanta-based non-profit organisation that supports low-wage, migrant workers. Each Friday you base yourself at a local hospital, where you are given an office on the fifth floor. There, employees who want mentoring may stop by without an appointment, and come back for as many sessions as they need.
One individual, who has just dropped by your office at the hospital, is Desta from Ethiopia. Desta has a college diploma in business administration from her home country; however her qualification is not recognised in the US. As well as Amharic and English, Desta also speaks Spanish, having lived in Spain for several years after graduating from college and raising two children there. Later on, as a single parent, she moved with her children to the US, where she had family.
Desta works part-time in the hospital’s kitchen and has a second job in a Spanish supermarket. She has no social or welfare insurance. She feels that she has the skills to secure a better-paid and full- time job, but lacks specific knowledge of the jobs market and the confidence to make job applications.
You are to recommend a mentoring strategy for Desta, including an overall assessment of how effective the intervention may be expected to be.
