Media plays a vital role in our understanding of the world, including current events and political issues.
Identify a current issue (Covid, climate change, protests for racial justice, etc.), research the way this
issue is presented by two opposing media sources, such as CNN and Fox News or The Guardian and
The Wall Street Journal, and then write an essay in which you explain and discuss the differences in their
presentation of the issue, making sure to address instances of political bias/partisan coverage. Be sure,
along the way, to make an argument about which news source more responsibly presents the issue. In
addition, be sure to provide a larger argument about the importance of news media to a stable and
functioning democracy.
The requirements for the essay are as follows:
• Essay must be exactly 3 pages in length
• Essay must contain at least one (1) in-text citation
• Essay must be argumentative in nature
• Essay must adhere to MLA standards and guidelines
Your essay should contain a well-argued thesis statement
• The “body” of your essay should work to support your thesis statement; in other words, each
paragraph of the essay should, in some form or another, relate to and support your overall
argument
• Each paragraph of your essay should contain a topic sentence
• Your essay should “flow” from one paragraph to the next; in other words, be sure to use
transitional words and phrases as you move from one point (paragraph) to the next
• Your essay should be free of grammatical and punctuation errors
MLA STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES
All rough drafts and final drafts of essays must adhere to the MLA standards and guidelines outlined
below. These standards and guidelines can be found in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research
Papers
ESSAY FORMAT
• Double-space everything
• Set document margins to 1” on all sides
• Number all of the pages of your essay; page numbers should be inserted in the upper right-hand
corner of the page, one-half inch from the top
• Include your last name on all of the pages of your essay; your name should be inserted in the
upper right-hand corner of the page, one-half inch from the top
THE FIRST PAGE
• In the top left-hand corner, list the following information (in the following order): your name, my
name, course number and section, and date
• Center the title of your essay just below the above list of information; your title should reflect the
argument of your essay
• Begin the essay just below your title; indent five spaces
A Writing Checklist
Before you turn in your essay, make sure that all of the following requirements have been met:
Title reflects the argument of the essay
Introduction contextualizes the argument of the essay
Introduction contains a clearly stated and defensible thesis statement (primary claim)
All body paragraphs begin with an artfully crafted transition from the previous paragraph
All body paragraphs contain a clearly stated topic sentence
All topic sentences relate to and support the essay’s thesis (primary claim)
All body paragraphs contain well-chosen evidence (quotations, description, summary, etc.)
Body paragraphs are logically ordered
Conclusion restates and reframes thesis in light of evidence
Writing is clear and concise
Essay is relatively free of grammatical and punctuation errors
All direct quotations are followed by a parenthetical reference to the page number(s) of the
quotation
Titles of essays are placed inside quotation marks
