Figure 1 shows the initial concept schematic for an Active/Passive Collective mechanism proposed for a military helicopter application.

You are to provide a simple scheme for the mechanism, optimized for minimum weight, whilst still meeting the loading requirements. Select appropriate material for the mechanism and explain your reasons. The complete assessment task will include the following;

i) Mechanism Analysis
Plot the Mechanical Advantage Curve, Grip Position vs Mechanical Advantage.
Plot the Apparent Force Curve, Grip Position vs Apparent Force.
Plot the SAU Output Shaft Velocity Curve, Grip Position vs SAU Velocity.

ii) Loading Analysis
Calculate and tabulate all loads at each of the interfaces

iii) Bearing Selection
Based on your calculated loads select suitable bearings for each connection/interface

iv) Margins of Safety
Based on your calculated loads determine the Margins of Safety of all components in the load path. Perform stress analysis where necessary.

v) Impact Analysis into End Stops
Perform an impact analysis into the end stops and determine the torque at the SAU. Calculate the corresponding Margins of Safety for this loading condition. Based on this assessment you will need to specify the stiffness of the springs required at the end stops to ensure the SAU Margins of Safety are adequate.

vi) Fatigue Analysis
Perform a fatigue analysis for each structural component to demonstrate that 2 lives of the duty cycles can be achieved.

vii) MATLAB Model
Derive the equations of motion for a Matlab Model and solve using the Runge-Kutta method. Using the results of the model plot the vibration response time history of the response and determine the resonant frequency of the systems.
