A nonparametric test is desired compared to a parametric test since they are less restricted by assumptions but are also less powerful compared to parametric tests. When it comes to determining which test to use whether it be a parametric or nonparametric test is important because if you get it wrong there’s a risk of using an incorrect statistical procedure or using a less powerful procedure. Parametric statistical tests rely on assumptions about the shape of the distribution in the underlying population and about the form or parameters, so this test assumes normal distribution (Hoskin, n.d.). Nonparametric statistical test would rely on no or few assumptions about the shape or parameters of the population distribution from which the sample was drawn (Hoskin, n.d.). If you decide to use a nonparametric test than your measurement scale should be nominal or ordinal and if you choose to use a parametric test, then the scales that are used would be interval or ratio.
