Literary Essay will focus on the collected works of one of the following poets we have read and discussed.
Chose which poet you would like to focus on (Martin Espada) and then write a 4-page essay discussing how the overall set of poems in that poet’s collection share a unifying theme.
To accomplish this you must:
Identify the unifying theme present in the collection of poems
Show how poetic devices such as imagery, simile, metaphor is used in each of the poems to express the unifying theme
Your essay should include:
An introduction to the poet/collection/theme
A thesis statement that claims why and how you believe this theme is present throughout the poet’s work
A conclusion to sum up your points
Depth of thought to while analyzing how the poet uses poetic devices to express the theme
Plenty of quoted lines to prove the claims you are making for each section (MLA rules for quoting and citing Poetry found in the Quoting from Literary Sources documents)
A Works cited page that will include:
Each poem used in the following format
“Poet’s last name, First name. “Name of Poem in quotes.” Title of Poetry Collection as Written on Blackboard in italics. Blackboard, Westchester Community College. Date of Access.
