Length: About 500-700 words. There is no need to write anything longer than this.
Write a 500-700word argument about how Their Eyes Were Watching God engages with one aspect of its cultural context.
Your Audience: The audience you should write this argument for consists of your peers, other students who will take ENL 200. You should assume that these students have read the work you’re discussing, so you don’t need to summarize it or provide background. Think about the purpose of this resource and the needs of your audience. They are trying to learn from what you write, so you want to be focused, thorough, and clear. They aren’t in your head and don’t assume what you do, so your argument needs to be well-supported and explained. You can certainly address your readers and modify your tone for them–be funny and even casual in order to engage your audience. Just be sure you’re also rigorous with your ideas and argument.
Use of outside sources: You shouldn’t use any sources written by other literary critics about the text. Use the textbook for “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Hurtson as the main source. Use page numbers and chapter numbers. Your ideas about the text should be your own. You can, however, use 1-2 reputable outside sources that provide you with background information about a particular cultural issue. Use of outside sources isn’t required, but if you do use sources to get background information, you must cite them. So, for instance, if you wanted to develop an argument about colorism in Their Eyes Were Watching God, you could read and cite sources that explain what colorism is. You would not, however, use sources about Their Eyes Were Watching God itself.
Requirements:
Follow MLA citation style. This includes in-text parenthetical citation and a list of works cited at the end. There is a link to an MLA guide on our myCourses site.
Your essay should have a thesis. Since the essay is short, this thesis should be super focused and specific.
Don’t summarize. Write for an audience familiar with your text.
Your essay should have a title that gives a sense of your topic.
You essay should also have a short intro (which includes the thesis), supporting body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. The majority of the paper should consist of body paragraphs.
Pay careful attention to textual language. Analyze it. Quote brief examples of it in your essay and discuss those examples. The language of the text and your interpretation of that language constitute your evidence. In order to support your argument, you need to show examples from the text and explain how those examples support your points.
Sample Topics: Here are some sample topics to get you thinking. You can write about one of these if you like, but you aren’t required to use one of these topics. Please remember these are just topics and not thesis statements. It’s your job to narrow the topic down and develop an argument about it.
