Learning Activity #7: Final Norms Paper (45 points)
During the semester, we will be discussing a variety of issues and theories concerning
lifespan development. In addition, we will be discussing various stages of development from a
physical, cognitive, social and emotional perspective. Many of these topics are covered in your
textbook and many will be discussed during lecture in our class modules.
Your final semester paper will involve identifying one stage of development in your life that
has had a significant impact on your physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
This period of development will be discussed from a theoretical perspective. Your assignment is
to compare each of the three developmental areas to one stage of development. Using our
textbook and material posted in canvas throughout the semester, you will compare where the text
says a person is at this age physically, cognitively, and psychosocially to where you were at this
age. (You are welcome to do this assignment on someone else as well.) Your paper must include
an introduction of this time period. This would include identifying your period of development, a
description of that period, and your justification for choosing this particular time period.
Next, there should be individual discussions on physical, cognitive, social and emotional
development. This would include characteristics for each area of development at the stage, where
you were compared to these areas, and an application and comparison of the research, norms,
and theories/theorists in reference to each area of development. Be specific, give specific
examples of how the developmental norms from our textbook compared to your physical,
cognitive, social, and emotional development. You must make specific references to the
theorists’ names, basic focus of various theories, and how the theories and norms compare and
describe where you were developmentally. A good conclusion will provide a detailed summary
of the impact that the time period has had on your life and how it compares to our textbook and
reading. You may discuss how you could use what you have learned about yourself through this
project, both personally and professionally? Much of the information you will need to complete
the semester paper will be discussed in lecture and content in canvas, and much can be found in
your class textbook. You will, however, need to read ahead of what we are discussing in class in
order to complete your project.
Your paper must have a minimum of three major theories from our course content and a
detail of their theory and how it applies to this stage of development. Also, each of the
developmental areas must be clearly explained, well detailed from the research, and show your
application of what we covered this semester for that stage of life.)
Your paper must be typed and include a minimum of 6 direct quotes cited from our course
textbook or instructor notes. A quality paper will be a comprehensive well written piece of work.
(Minimum 4-5 page double spaced,12’font) This is a major semester paper which should reflect
your ability to apply with reference the theories and concepts that you have learned throughout
the semester. In addition, this is a formal paper and needs to be presented in an appropriate
college level format, free of spelling and grammar errors.
