This assignment will build your knowledge of searching databases, assessing the scholarliness of sources and referencing. You will learn how to find sources and assess their scholarliness and authoritativeness in lectures. You will learn how write an annotation in tutorials where you will practice writing an annotation, and receive some feedback. This task will help you prepare for Assessment 2 (the literature review), where you will be locating and evaluate 5 sources relevant to your scenario and role. This assessment relates to Learning Outcomes 2 and 3, which notes that, in this task you will:
2) demonstrate proficiency in academic literacies, including applying appropriate referencing conventions
3) practice and develop professional writing conventions for a range of audiences and formulate persuasive arguments in written text.
You will need to:
1. choose a scenario (these are on the JSB172 Blackboard site) and a role within the scenario (for example, lawyer, security officer, police officer). You will address this scenario and role in both your annotated bibliography and your literature review.
2. locate a range of five (5) scholarly, peer-reviewed and current sources related to your chosen role and scenario using the QUT Library catalogue and databases. You are not expected to necessarily find sources that relate specifically to your scenario and role; you need to locate sources that discuss some of the broader issues of your case study and then apply that information to that aspect of your scenario.
3. present these sources as an annotated bibliography that includes:
• the reference of the source, formatted according to QUT Harvard referencing style (as per QUT Cite Write guidelines link from the QUT Library homepage)
• a 150 word annotation of the source where you outline the argument of the source then explain how the source is relevant to your role and scenario.
PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to organise this assignment according to your chosen themes (you will do this in the literature review task). For your annotated bibliography you must find sources that relate to your scenario and role and comment on them in alphabetical order of author’s name.
