JOURNAL CONTEXT
Back in Lecture 0, we discussed the idea that music can be broken down into four major elements: pitch, rhythm, tone color, and dynamics.
Most pieces of music use all four of these elements to some extent. But you will often find that distinct styles, traditions, and individual compositions will emphasize certain elements more strongly than others.
This varied emphasis on the four elements across musical culture is a good thing, to be sure. There is no one right way to make or enjoy music. In general, we encourage you to explore as wide a range of styles and traditions as possible. For this Listening Journal, however, we would like you to think carefully about the kinds of music you already enjoy the most. Are there certain styles that appeal to you strongly?
JOURNAL PROMPT
Based on your personal taste, consider which of the four elements of music you appreciate the most as a listener. If you had to choose, which one gets you the most excited when you sit down to engage with music?
Write a paragraph of around two hundred words in continuous prose (i.e., no bullet points or incomplete sentences) using the following prompt as a guide:
Name your favorite element: pitch, rhythm, tone color, or dynamics. (For the purposes of this assignment you must pick just one.)
Name one example of a piece of music that you think uses that element well, telling us the title and composer.
What do you like about how that specific piece of music uses your favorite element? Provide as much descriptive detail as possible.
Which musical style would you say the piece is in (e.g., pop, folk, soul, classical, metal, funk, etc.)? Is that a style you particularly enjoy?
Is an emphasis on the element you are discussing typical of this style of music in general? Or is it a feature of this one piece in particular?
Since there is no right or wrong answer about which element of music is best, it should be unnecessary to resort to negative arguments about how bad or boring some other element is. Instead, try to stay focused on the element you enjoy, and keep it positive!

STUDENT DISCUSSION JOURNAL GUIDELINES
Students will be bound by the UW Student Conduct Code, which prohibits academic misconduct. As defined in Student Governance Policy, Chapter 209, Section 7.C, academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to:
plagiarism (i.e., passing off someone else’s work as your own)
self-plagiarism (i.e., submitting the same work for separate courses without permission)
unauthorized collaboration (i.e., working with someone else on graded work)
engaging in prohibited behavior (e.g., sending abusive messages)
To avoid penalties for plagiarism, be sure to practice proper citation in all Listening Journals. This means, at a minimum:
clear citation of all information derived from pre-existing sources using in-text references to the source (e.g., “According to an NME magazine article by [AUTHOR]…”)
clear acknowledgment of all prose directly reproduced from elsewhere using quotation marks
Note that digital resources, such as “Wikipedia,†count as pre-existing sources, and must be cited like anything else.
