In the story, her husband, John, who is also her doctor feels that the only way she can get through her depression is if she rests and does not worry about anything. Her moving to an estate was to help herself overcome her illness of depression. The narrator and her husband move into a large room that has an ‘ugly’ yellow wallpaper, which the author criticizes. The narrator describes the yellow wallpaper as ‘ being partially torn off the walls’. The author then attempts to switch the room, but her husband denies her request to move.

Throughout the story the narrator begins to become fascinated by the wallpaper. In the story the author uses some elements of fiction such as closed plot which the narrator becomes more obsessed with the wallpaper. The author also uses rising actions in the story when the main character starts to create some scenarios and her own imagination in her mind about what happened with the yellow paper.

The author mixed feelings about the wallpaper. The wallpaper represented a prison as to when she’s living in a nursery with her bed nailed to the floor. She eventually changes her feelings towards the wallpaper and she suddenly finds her hidden self and freedom.
In the story, “A Rose for Emily”, the narrator talks about how Emily is someone who is stubborn and likes to live her own life her own way. With her father’s death she finds she finds her own way to deal with her grief and the situation.
Throughout the story the author talks about how Emily refuses to bury her father. This could be due to the fact that she resents her father because he kept her away from interacting with people, which causes her to feel isolated from the world.
