Joe has recently moved back into the community after living in a rehabilitation facility for 2 years.  Prior to a massive stroke Joe worked long hours as a chef.  “He lived hard and played hard.”  At 32 years of age he was single, travelled extensively and saw nothing but a future filled with parties and career opportunities.  He has a passion for cars, football and cricket.

It’s taken enormous adjustment for Joe to regain his independence and confidence.  He uses a stick to remain balanced, has significant paralysis down his left side and his speech is slurred.  Initially, depression limited Joe from making any physical progress, but slowly Joe has regained some of the ability to move forward and establish a new life.

You are a support worker assisting Joe with developing skills for independent living.  Your focus is to help him develop a shopping routine and to become involved in some community based activities.

Over the first 4 weeks of your involvement with Joe a number of challenges are faced:

• Joe becomes very anxious and impatient when standing in line at the supermarket.  Last week the situation became very difficult when a person was talking to the cashier about a faulty product, slowing the line significantly.  Joe became stressed, raising his voice at the woman and the cashier, and drawing lots of attention to himself as he moved around anxiously.

• Joe would like to become involved in cooking again and has considered volunteering his time to the local community centre.  The coordinator of the house has decided she cannot let Joe cook in the kitchen unsupervised as she fears he will be at risk near the gas stoves due to his left side paralysis.  Joe is really angry and offended by any suggestion that he cannot cook independently.

• Joe’s slurred speak becomes harder to understand when he is anxious or stressed.  You turn up one morning and Joe appears very upset about something but you cannot understand what he is trying to tell you.  The more you don’t understand him the more anxious Joe becomes.
