Constructing a Dichotomous Key, Part Two
In the creation of your Comparative Table for Week Four, you may have noted that your fish share some characteristics yet differ on other characteristics. You will use the observations that you have noted in your Comparative Table as the basis for constructing a dichotomous key. Look for characteristics that are straightforward and simple, ones that someone could use to easily distinguish between your fishes using only visual observation.
Using these characteristics, create a sequence of choices between two oppositional statements — that is a dichotomy (also called couplets). Work towards constructing the couplets so that the correct choices clearly lead to a positive identification of each fish in question, in as few steps as possible. (It will be tempting to showcase as many of the characteristics you observed as you can, but for a dichotomous key, less is more!)
Here is an example of a dichotomous key for three fishes.
Q: Is the body color gray?
If the answer is YES, then go to dilemma number 2.
Q: Is the body color green?
If the answer is YES, then your fish is Species B.
Q: Is the body shape elongate and without scales?
If the answer is YES, then your fish is Species A.
Q: Is the body shape flattened and scales are present?
If the answer is YES, then your fish is Species C.
Here is another example of a dichotomous key, for four items. Note that although the format is somewhat different, like the example above it utilizes couplets/dichotomous options to arrive at the correct identification:
1. Is it metal?
If YES, go to q 2.
If NO, it’s a napkin.
2. Does it have multiple tines?
If YES, it’s a fork.
If NO, go to q 3.
3. Is it sharp?
If YES, its a knife.
If NO, it’s a spoon.
PLEASE NOTE: I have uploaded Part- One of my dichotomous key that you will use from to do Part two. You do not have to use all the characteristics, Maybe choose about 4 simple ones. If you are not clear please let me know.
