media use, and rightly so. Therefore, employers have free reign when it comes
to social media monitoring. Employers have a right to protect their companies’
interests by hiring staff whose lives, professionally and on-line, align with
company policy and culture. Screening social media use in the hiring process
ensures that only those who fit company culture are hired. Employers should
also monitor employee social media use to ensure employees maintain work
appropriate social media profiles in line with company policy. This right
extends to taking any disciplinary action, including firing or suspending
employees whose social media activities violate company policy.
