Instructions: Imagine that you work with a local food bank in your area. You set up a visit with a local school to have their 5th and 6th grade students visit the food bank and volunteer as a part of a field trip. Prior to their trip, the school asks you to do an education session with these students so they understand why your organization exists and the consequences of food insecurity in their own community.
As you prepare for this presentation, you decide to create a handout. One part of the handout is an FAQ sheet. The other part of this handout is an information sheet that tells the story, impact, and consequences of food insecurity.
FAQ Component:
Include *at least* the following questions, along with answers.
What is meant by “food insecurity”?
How does food insecurity in the US compare to other parts of the world? Include numbers and/or percentages.
What are some ways that human behavior contributes to food insecurity?
What is the major cause of chronic hunger?
What are some things that they (5th-6th graders) can do to help with food insecurity?
In addition to the questions above, create five of your own that you would like to address.
Format your FAQ sheet to look like a handout that is appropriate for 5th and 6th grade students. Make sure that you have written your answers so that these students will be able to understand what you are sharing with them. Ensure that the FAQ sheet is no more than 2 pages.
Informational component:
In 250-400 words, explain the impact of food insecurity in your own community. That is, discuss that food insecurity is not something that exists “far away” or “in other countries” but can be occurring “next door” or with friends in school. Contextualize this to explain why your food bank/nonprofit exists. As a part of your reflection and informational component, be sure to address the following:
What are the consequences of food insecurity on someone’s quality of life? In the context of everything you have learned thus far, why is food insecurity so concerning?
What is the likelihood that food insecurity exists within their school? What should students be thinking about and responding to? How can they be more sensitive to this reality?
What is the community’s responsibility to address food insecurity?
How can these 5th and 6th graders address hunger and food insecurity?
You can format this as a part of the FAQ handout or add it as a 1-2 page report along with the FAQ sheet. Include a reference page for both parts formatted using APA guidelines.
