Instructions
Each laboratory write-up should include an introduction, materials/methods, results and discussion. If you would like your report evaluated before final submission, please complete it early and turn in the assignment at least 4 or 5 days prior to the due date, this will allow me to make suggestions and give you time to make revisions. Lab reports WILL NOT be reviewed during class time.
Introduction
This section provides background material. The introduction should state the purpose of the experiments and the necessary background required to understand the experiments. For example, if you were doing a laboratory on yogurt production, the introduction should introduce yogurt, explain the biochemistry of yogurt and discuss the strains one would be used to produce milk into yogurt. Most of the material for writing this section will come from the laboratory manual and text.
Materials and Methods
This section should explain, in great detail, how the experiment was conducted. If well written, someone should be able to repeat your experiment exactly based on the instructions in this section. If you followed the instructions in the manual exactly, you may reference your laboratory manual (please use scientific format or APA format). However, if the instructions were changed at any point, you must explain those changes. Don’t forget, this should be in PAST tense as the experiment was already completed.
Results
This section describes the results you have obtained from your experimentation. It should be detailed and concise. You will state the result and a conclusive statement about the results, but they should not be discussed here. You are encouraged to use tables and drawings to explain the data, but each table or figure must be labeled. In addition, the results section SHOULD NOT contain just tables and figures, all of the data should be written in paragraph form. Be sure to label all diagrams in detail! Never use 1st person, you should always write in passive voice. Rather than “I conducted an experiment on boiling water”, you should state “The boiling water…”.
Discussion
The discussion section will include the analysis of the data. You will discuss why your results turned out as they did and make thoughtful conclusions about the experiment. You should refer to the material provided in the introduction in this section. For example, if you culture E. coli and the plate was supposed to turn blue and it turned red, you should state that this happened. If the E. coli was supposed to turn blue and it did turn blue, state that it worked appropriately. You should also state what it means when it turns blue. For example “The blue color indicates that lactose is produced from the enzyme”. You should then discuss and analyze the why and how of your results (Why did they turn out like this? Were they supposed to? What went wrong? Were errors made?).
References
You must reference any outside sources you used to conduct this experiment, including your text and laboratory manual. If you used any additional sources to write the report, list them here. The references must also be cited within the text if you have drawn information from a source. Please use scientific format or APA format. You must also include in text citations for every fact borrowed or paraphrased in the report.
P.S. I dont think the E.Coli came out as planned. just state that in the report. maybe the Aseptic technique I didn’t do correctly there. or there was possibly too much time witht the cover off of the pietri dish while swabbing the bacteria on there. some how maybe a contaminant got in there? Please include the photos attached of the petri dishes.
