These pages should be double spaced, with standard one-inch margins, and 12
Point Times New Roman font. In addition to the body of your paper, you should include
an APA style cover page (professional version) and APA style references page using the
7th edition guidelines
Introduction. A paragraph or two that clearly and concisely describes (1) the topic
of your paper, (2) the question you will investigate, and/or (3) the various points
of view or differing explanations proposed in the scientific articles on which you
are basing your paper. Include a thesis statement detailing the intent of your work
within your introduction. An abstract is NOT required, but feel free to include one
if desired. Keep in mind though that abstracts will not count towards the
minimum page length though.
Research Section. The core of the paper (4-8 pages) must be a discussion of the
scientific evidence. You should consult at least three academic sources, but can
include other any other types of sources beyond this. Try to pick at least two
sources that have been published in the past five years to keep the evidence
current.You can choose sources that have
contrasting viewpoints and frame it as a debate, you can choose sources that all
provide similar lines of evidence, but focus on different populations, etc…Some
papers are more focused on summarizing the research, while others are more
focused on integration of ideas- either balance is fine, as long as you do focus on
both concepts within your work!
While reviewing your articles, make sure you clearly describe (1) the topic of the
research being reported, (2) the research methods used (and how these methods
may have affected the results), (3) the researchers’ conclusions, and (4) questions
raised by the research. You can choose to write about each article individually and
then integrate or combine the evidence throughout the work.
Be sure to appropriately cite your sources in text using APA style. Focus on
putting the evidence in your own words and generally try to keep direct quotes to
a minimum (one or two total). Please avoid block quotes, as the emphasis is
meant to be on your words and not the authors’.
In the last paragraph or two of the research section, you should summarize the
research findings and briefly state how the research relates to the topic of your
paper. Good examples of how research can be used to support a discussion are
given throughout your textbook and likely found in the articles that you will read.
Conclusion. A very important part of the paper is your own opinions and ideas,
based on the research you have read. What conclusions can you draw from your
reading? What important questions related to the topic remain unanswered? How
could further research, education, and/or clinical intervention help with the issue
at hand? How might this research apply to the ‘real world’?, etc… Wrap up the
evidence you have summarized and inject your analysis/thoughts as appropriate.
Generally, APA style writing avoids 1st person and remains relatively tentative in
making sweeping conclusions. Note as well that personal experience generally is
not appropriate in this type of writing- try to keep a removed stance instead of a
personal one here.
References Page. All the books and journals used for your paper should be listed
alphabetically in the references section at the end. This reference page needs to be in APA style format. This page is NOT
included in your minimum page count.
