“Rip
Van Winkle”
‘Rip Van Winkle’ is a short story written
by an American author and was initially published in 1819. The book strictly
follows the Dutch American villager named Rip, who comes across mysterious
dutchmen, drinks their liquor, and goes into a deep sleep only to wake up 20
years in Catskill mountain. He went to a deep sleep only to wake up later in a
changing world. The story contains different characters having different habits
as the portrait by the author. The first character comes to Rip, a henpecked
husband who is said to be meek and loathes. He is also said to be a wanderer
and therefore moves around the mountain without any reason, where he meets
strange men playing nine pins. Rip Van Winkle has a wife named Dame Van Winkle,
and she is also referred to as a nagging wife. Another character is Derrick Van
Bommel, a local schoolmaster. He decided to serve in the American Revolution as
an officer of the flag and later became a congress member. The other character
mentioned in the book is ripped van winkle 3, an infant grandchild of rip van
winkle. He has a mother called Judith gardener. It is not well explained why he
is named after his grandfather other than being named after his father. The
other characters are Dutcher, a wolf, older woman, among others.
Firstly, the relationship of rip van with
his wife and other villagers is said not to be good as expected. He has a dog
called wolf, who is also put upon by Dame van’s wife. Rip’s farm seems to be a
source of misfortune every time, and the only desire he derives is from his
consistent with his fellow men in the village around where he lives, who they
tend to meet every day to go and discuss the village gossip and other recent
topics around the village. The author again indicates rip’s son as luck and survival
because he exists after his wife and other villagers had died long ago. The
narrator indicates Rip van winkle as curious by saying that he is of all
places. He walks around the mountain to meet his fellow villagers to get new
information about what is going on around the village. The author again
describes Rip as lazy and good for nothing. To justify his laziness character,
he says that a man sleeps for several years only to wake up in a changing
world.
