In this assignment you will create a “Life of” profile for an animal species. This assignment will give you experience completing an in-depth behavioral analysis in a specific area of behavior. It will provide experience watching, describing, and discussing behavior. These are important skills you will use to prepare the case report for your final course project. You will have until the end of week 3 to submit the assignment.
First, pick an animal species. You may choose any type of animal (mammal, bird, fish, amphibian, reptile, or arthropod). Make sure to focus on a specific species rather than a group of species (i.e., ring-tailed lemur is a species, “lemurs” is not). However, the animal you choose must be a different class than that on which you focus for your final project. For example, if you choose to focus on cheetahs for your final project (a mammal) then you may not choose a mammal for this assignment.
After selecting your focal species, decide on what aspect of that animal’s behavior you will profile. You may choose to profile:
The social life of the animal (e.g., social behavior, caregiving behavior, cooperative behavior).
The communicative life of the animal (e.g., visual, auditory, olfactory communication strategies)
The foraging life of the animal (e.g., foraging strategies, prey or food preferences)
Here is an example of how to format a “Life of” Profile.
Your “Life of” profile should include the following:
The focal species chosen along with their scientific name. This animal must be a different class than what you’ve chosen for your final course project!
A discussion of 5 relevant behaviours related to your topic of choice (social, communication, or foraging). For each behavior, provide the following 4 details:
A definition of each behavior
Make sure definitions are clear, concise, and avoid using the word you are defining in your definition.
Descriptions of the circumstances under which the behavior occurs (when does the animal engage in this behavior)?
Whether/how the behavior is evolutionarily advantageous (i.e., how is the behavior important for the survival and reproduction of the animal).
A statement on how these behaviors can be promoted in captive environments.
A minimum of 3 photos as figures in your profile (see example). Each photo should display a behavior relevant to your topic of choice (social, communication, or foraging). For example, if you choose to create a social profile you may include photos of common affiliative, aggressive, or submissive behaviors shown by that species.
Your figure(s) must be formatted in APA 7 format (Links to an external site.) and properly referenced in the text. Click here for an example of how to format your photos.
Provide the photo credits for each photo at the end of your paper. Click here for an example of how to credit your photos.
A minimum of 1 video link is included in your reference section. This video should be mentioned in the text of the paper and describe the focal behavior seen in the video.
Like the photos, the video should show a behavior relevant to your topic of choice (social, communication, or foraging). If the behavior does not occur right at the start of the video, please list the timestamp of the behavior.
Your paper should be between 2-3 pages of text (not including title page, references, photos) and a minimum of 2 scholarly references should be included at the end of the document. All references should also be cited within the text of the paper, using in-text citations. All references and citations should follow APA 7 format.
