In the following folders, you will find links to videos of different music from the 1960s-2000s broken down by decade and are presented in a timeline from oldest to most recent. I recommend listening to them in the order presented. Your assignment is to watch/listen to the music and pay attention to sociological themes that you notice concerning how women and men are depicted over the course of time.
There are a couple of ways of examining this topic. 1) Who is singing about what and what they are implying about women and 2) what do the lyrics are indicating about how women and men are maybe being viewed or described by the lyrics.
We can look at music as being an indicator of social phenomena of feeling/attitudes about what is happening in society as what is happening in society at any given time impacts what is on people’s minds…it’s like a reflection of society. In the creative (songwriting) process, these thoughts can impact what is created (music). Therefore, we can examine music to look for themes and indicators of what might have been happening in society during a particular time. As detectives, we can look for clues that suggest what was happening in society or more to our point, what society thought about certain social aspects. Here, I will present some music that indicates certain and pretty clear indicators of societal values and attitudes about men and women. More importantly, how women saw themselves and how men saw them.
Your job/assignment is to put on your sociologist hat and:
1) listen to all of the music (not just one folder) noting what themes you notice or specifics that you notice about what women and men are singing about and how women and men are being portrayed by the singers.
2) Write 2-3 paragraphs (or as needed) answering the following questions: 1)describe what themes you noticed and how or if you see any evolution to what is being sung about and 2) describe what is happening to how women saw themselves / what values they held and if those values did or did not change. 3) how they were regarded by men in songs and how those men did or did not change.
3) Be scholarly! Scholarly thoughts, proper sentence, grammar, and spelling.
Yes, there are a lot of songs here but I think that it will take an equivalent amount of time to listen to them / watch them as it would read a chapter in the textbook. You should have plenty of time to complete this assignment and can start it right away. This will give you more time to study for your other finals.
