In Chapter 7 you have been introduced to the formal definitions of social justice and American values. As you read on pages 212-215, our nation’s foundational documents (e.g., Constitution, Bill of Rights, Federalist Papers and Declaration of Independence and others) have defined our fundamental values. Three of those values are liberty, equality and legitimacy. The protection of these values is critical in policy development and decision making. For this discussion board, you are going to have the opportunity to evaluate a criminal justice policy in the context of a real criminal justice problem while protecting these values.
As you may recall, in Chapter 2 on pages 52-54 you were introduced to decision making through strategies and tactics. You may need to review these to complete this discussion board.
At the end of Chapter 7 on page 230-231 there is an application of strategies and tactics in the context of illicit substance use(for this discussion board, illicit drugs are controlled substances such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, opioids, NOT marijuana.) For this discussion board you will need to read pages 230-231. After reading, choose 1 of the 4 strategies listed on page 231 (supply reduction, demand reduction, harm reduction or legalization/decriminalization). Here are the questions you need to answer:
1. Which of the strategies do you most favor? Why?
2. Which tactics do you find most favorable for achieving the goal of the strategy? Why?
3. If your strategy was adopted, how would the values of liberty, equality and legitimacy be protected for drug users and non-drug users?
To achieve maximum points, be sure to demonstrate your understanding of liberty, equality and legitimacy.
