Imagine that you were asked to moderate a panel discussion between two psychologists, one who follows the Freudian perspective, and one who adheres to the behaviorist perspective on the existence of the unconscious.
Begin by asking both psychologists to explain their stance on whether the unconscious exists. This will require you to determine three points, supported by scholarly literature, that each could use to counter the other’s perspective.
As their discussion evolves, you may bring in additional questions to “help” moderate the conver-sations. For example, you may want to follow up on the role of subliminal cues, or ask them both to explain whether it is possible to learn without being aware of what one is learning, or what evidence they can provide to explain whether behavior occurs without thought, or even how to explain dreams such as through the Activation-Synthesis Hypothesis (Hobson & McCarley, 1977).
You may present this assignment in a question and answer format, and use first person as appropriate. However, locate articles to assist you for the debate between Sigmund Freud and B.F. Skinner on the existence of the unconscious.
One of the major contributions of the psychoanalytic perspective proposed by Sigmund Freud and modified by C.G. Jung and others is the existence and influence of the unconscious on human thought and behavior. While there is much criticism of psychoanalytic theory, there is also support. Some of the support has been derived from studies of subliminal influences. Review of a minimum of three studies to support the existence of an “unconscious” and at least three that refute its existence published within the last 15 years.
