In order to practice analyzing and interpreting research, all students will complete four 3-4 page (not including title and reference pages) critiques of published, peer-reviewed journal articles. These articles will be provided by the instructor and the critique format is provided below with a rubric. All article critiques should be in proper APA format. The use of APA headings is REQUIRED for each main point and sub-point listed below to demonstrate that you understand the appropriate section the information belongs in, and to demonstrate your mastery of APA formatted headings. Direct quotes should NEVER be utilized as that does not show an integration of the information into your learning. Instead, you should accurately paraphrase and use citations throughout.
The rationale for Article (10 points):
a. In 1-2 sentences provide a brief rationale for why this article is important and how it
adds to the literature. This should be an extremely brief summary (again, 1-2 sentences).
II. Identification of Research Questions/Hypotheses: (10 points):
a. Identify the research questions and/or hypotheses the article is supposed to be address;
b. Identify if the author’s listed them explicitly or if you had to ‘guess’ what the research
questions were.
III. Identification of Variables, Concepts, and Constructs (the WHAT they are measuring, 15
points):
a. Make sure to identify the Independent and Dependent Variable(s) under study if the
article is based on hypothesis-testing/quantitative methods. Also, if the study is
quantitative, identify phenomena that could be the subject of a qualitative study in future
research.
b. If the based on inductive/qualitative methods, identify the phenomena of interest being
described and studied. Also, identify variables that could be used in a future study based
on hypothesis-testing/quantitative methods.
IV. Descriiption of Methodology (the HOW of what they are measuring, 20 points total):

a. Sampling Strategy (specific sampling method used, how did they decide to recruit
participants, and whom did they decide to recruit).
b. Concept Measurement/Assessment (how are they measuring/assessing the concept under
investigation).
c. Method of Analysis (what test or method of statistical or qualitative analysis strategy are
they using to systemize the data)
d. Accounting for External Validity and Generalizability (using your textbook and the
supplemental article on Threats to Validity: how are the researchers accounting for these
issues?)
e. Accounting for Internal Validity/Trustworthiness (Using your text and the supplemental
article on Threats to Validity: how did they control for alternate explanations or seek to
account for their own worldview and values during the analysis process)
V. Identification, Descriiption, and Critique of Conclusions (15 points)
a. Identify at least 2 main conclusions that the authors make based on their data
b. Identify positive support for those conclusions and justify your support
c. Critique the conclusions and justify your critique
VI. Applications: Identify 2 ways to incorporate the ideas and conclusions presented in the
article into counseling practice (15 points).
VII. APA-formatted paper, proper use of citations, and complete reference (15 points)
