I found that due to my slow to warm up / fearful temperament, one of the best method of socialization for me is through observation (Observational Method). According to Ferguson, the Observational Method is when a child observes what others do and immitates their behavior (Ferguson, 2016).
I am an observer. I observe people’s faces, emotions and actions. By doing this, I am able to better assimilate into my environment. I remember one of my first days at school in the United States (Anticipatory Socialization Timeline: Socialization Milestones n.d.) , my mom gave me Adobo (a chicken dish) and rice for lunch. Sitting down at lunch time, I observed that no one brought lunch like mine. In fact, one of my peers asked, “What’s that?” Embarrassed, I slowly turned away and put my lunch away and looked at what they were eating. They all had “sandwiches.” I didn’t even know what “sandwiches” were, but that evening I told her that I didn’t want rice anymore, I wanted SANDWICHES!
I believe that the Observational Method is effective in the outcome of self-regulation. Self-regulation is a skill that a child can learn as he develops his pre-frontal cortex, so that he can pause, think and then respond to a situation. This really depends on the child. If this comes naturally to him/her, then this method would work. If my child is one who jumps right into a situation, I would probably nurture this method, so that he would learn to pause, observe his environment, before taking immediate action. Fortunately, all my three sons have inherited a slow to warm up temperament and often observes first, and thinks before jumping into a situation. Although my oldest son goes through this process, it doesn’t stop him from taking risks such as parachuting out of an airplane multiple times!
