Integrated Research Design Prospectus (Draft)
Using the Integrated Research Design word template below, take the information you have gleaned from your reading and understanding of your dissertation topic and fill in each section of the prospectus outline. The intent of this time is to provide 2-3 pages of information for each question that will give the reader an understanding of what direction you are heading for your dissertation. Even though all your ideas may not be completely formulated, put down what you know now. Be sure to use sentences in narrative form not bullets.
Section 1: Introduction
Entrepreneurship is one of the most desirable forms of creating and building a business to generate profit in the world’s market today. However, the most important aspect of entrepreneurship is leadership and building a strong social capital. Entrepreneurship is becoming a defining business trend in the Middle East and around the world. In the past few years, I have witness economies transitioning towards free market systems like Bahrain, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Oman. The Gulf Region is developing at a rapid pace and has become a lucrative marketplace that have captured the interest and attention of the world for economic, political and cultural reasons. This research will explore the impact of social capital on Entrepreneurs and employee engagement.
My personal goal is to understand the challenges of developing a business in a nation that is culturally different than your own and how having a strong social capital can facilitate opportunities for a successful journey.
To understand Social Capital and its impact on employee engagement and how it applies to organizations and their engagement with employees, it is important to understand why organizations develop relations and partnership with their employees and why they give back to their communities.  This research seeks to explore emerging themes startups companies and their employee engagements and highlight some of the challenges for social capital investments within the organizations.
I will focus on studying the measurements of social capital based on the broad agreement that social capital is embedded in the relationships between individuals, and the tangible and intangible resources rooted in these relationships are proven valuable resources and often the sources of benefits individually or collectively (Adler & Kwon, 2002; Burt, 1992; Lin, 1999; Putnam, 1995; Nahapiet & Ghoshal, 1998).
Identifying the factors that influence entrepreneurs’ interactive effects of employee engagement and the direct relation of organizational investment in social capital has driven me to begin this research.
Personal goal: Understanding the challenges of developing a business in a nation that is culturally different than your own requires having the determination to do it, utilizing the right tools, having the right network, and above all is having the desire to do it.  Living these experiences motivated me to want to help other entrepreneurs learn the effects of social capital and its impact on employee engagement.  The main research question is how business incubators can support entrepreneurs build up networks by focusing more on social capital and employment engagement.
Practical goal: Create entrepreneur’s developmental tools that will enable them personal and professional growth, business expansion, and improve their business, cultural and leadership development.
Intellectual goals: Understand the development of employee engagement and the impact of social capital and leadership development.  In research identify tools to developing social capital and its impact in employee’s development.  Scholar practitioners plan to conduct research utilizing the quantitative method to achieve this intellectual goal.
Section 2: Conceptual Framework
According to Creswell & Creswell, the theory in qualitative studies “becomes the endpoint” (2018, p. 63). In qualitative research design, the data will guide the conceptual framework. The common themes, categories, experiences, and data will provide the building blocks that will help the research generalize or get to conclusions. Research shows that Entrepreneurship primary leadership styles are transformational, servant, culturally based leadership; I will consider those theories as a component of the conceptual framework.
Uhl-Bien (2006) offers Relational Theory (RLT) as an overarching framework for the study of leadership as a social influence process. While not addressing SC specifically, she offers ample evidence to support RLT. She distinguishes it from the recent, predominant relational leadership work known as Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), suggesting that the two perspectives of relational leadership theory can complement each other in future research. An entity perspective looks at the individual as the unit of analysis and interpersonal relationships (quantity, quality, type) as the variables analyzed. The relational perspective views leadership as a process of social construction; thus, relationships become the basic unit of analysis, not individuals. She shares several good definitions of leadership, as well as suggestions for future directions in leadership research (e.g., how relationships form and develop in the workplace). While not addressing Social Capital specifically, the underlying tie to Social Capital theory is the importance of relationships in leadership.
